Justice is the concept of moral rightness based upon ethics, law, religion, rationality, and fairness. But justice is not the same in every country. What some countries may consider to be just may be considered unjust and ever immoral by others. This is demonstrated in the 1999 film â€Å"Brokedown Palace†. In the movie, two lifelong friends take a trip to Thailand to celebrate their high school graduation. Long story short, they are accused of smuggling drugs and are sentenced to 33-years in a Taiwanese prison. What seemed just by the Taiwanese government would be considered unjust by the Canadian government. The reason for this is because they did not follow the four purposes of justice; justice as an instrument of society, substantive justice, procedural justice, and justice as a social norm. This outline what each of these purposes entitles and why the Taiwanese government failed to follow these when prosecuting the girls. After watching the movie Brokedown Palace, you might assume that because of the way the girls were treated throughout the trial and by how unjust the laws imposed on the girls were that this shows how unjust the Taiwanese government truly is. But this is because what the Taiwanese government may see to be just may seem unjust to other nations around the world and vise-versa. According to as an instrument of society, the extent to which we recognize a nation’s laws as being just is the degree to which we identify that nation as being just. This was demonstrated throughout the movie. There were several examples of laws that in the eyes of the Taiwanese government seemed just, but in the eyes of Canadians were far from it. An example of this was the sentence that was given to the girls when they were found guilty of drug smuggling. A 33-sentence is a very out-dated and cruel punishment for any drug smuggler in the eyes of Canadians, any given the past history of these girls would seem barbaric. In Canada, the usual sentence for someone found guilty of drug smuggling is 10 years, and even this is usually reduced to 6-8 years. You might also think that the very laws imposed onto the girls are unjust. According to substantive law, some laws may be inconsistent with a superior standard and although they might appear to be legal, they may not be just. In Canada, if a law is found to be unjust based upon the superior standard,  that law will be changed or dismantled. The Taiwanese clearly have not based their laws on the superior standard. An example of this is when they allowed Alice to serve both sentences. While this may seem just, is it really appropriate for one person to serve someone else’s sentence. Other nations including Canada would never allow something like this to happen. Another example of the Taiwanese government not understanding the purpose of justice in the movie Brokedown Palace was their procedural justice. According to Procedural justice, a country must use proper administration of the formal rules when exercising the law. In Canada as well as in many other countries, there are a wide range of procedures which must be followed when arresting and prosecuting someone. The Taiwanese government showed none of these when arresting the girls. When the girls were first arrested, they were not told what they were being arrested for and they were not told any of their rights, such as the right to an attorney or a phone call. Procedural justice also states that judges cannot not disregard the rules of law. An example of this is the judge who prosecuted the girls. He didn’t not take into account the girls past and even the severity of the crime. He just prosecuted the girls based on the testimony of the hotel worker who had said that they had trie d to charge their drinks onto someone else. When prosecuting the girls, the Taiwanese government also failed to follow one of the most important purposes of justice. Justice as a social norm states that justice is based upon the beliefs that and attitudes shared and accepted as the norm. In Canada, we have multiple politicians from different parts of Canada with different backgrounds. This makes is so when we make laws, we get the social from our entire country to back-up the laws that we make. But we also follow the standards set forth by other countries we view as being civilized. The Taiwanese government did not follow this social norm when arresting these girls. Other nations would have considered the age of these girls as well as their past criminal offences when prosecuting them. This would have made their sentences much shorter and might have even aloud the girls to get off scot-free. They also tricked the girls into signing a faulty confession by telling Darlene what she was signing was a plea of innocence when really it was a confession to the crime. In conclusion, the Taiwanese seemed to be very unjust based on how they made their laws and how they were implemented. The reason for this is because they didn’t follow the purpose of Justice. Brokendown Palace portrayed the Taiwanese government as using an outdated and uncivilized form of justice which to the civilized world would appear as being unjust. The purpose of justice is not just to enforce laws for the sack of cleaning the streets but is to make a society civilized. Given a person of Goldmund's free spirit and constant need for change, and to experience the new, puts one giant obstacle in his path. He cannot settle down, however much he craves everlasting love. His one love and possible life long companion, need not be a 'wife', simply a person to share his soul with. That person is Narziss. There is, however, one flaw in the equation. Goldmund craves physical love as well as mental stimulation. Whatever possible mate meets his physical requirements in a lover, does not stand up to the standards created by Goldmund's relationship with Narziss. Goldmund is destined to wander, unhappy, searching for something, though he knows not what he is looking for. His many relationships with women, and his tremendous commitment to his art prove tha t all he ever wanted was for something to totally ensconce him, to totally envelop him, to fill the emptiness in his heart left by the mother who deserted him. Goldmund longs for something that can be attained by him at any given point in time, but the fact is, he longs for something that he doesn't want. Security. A Model of the Basic Communication Process A Model of the Basic Communication Process which is expanded from the Liner Model of communication by adding feedback to this model, the essential components of communication includes: Sender, Receivers, Messages, Noise, Channels, Feedback and Context. These components are interactive. When two people are communicating, it describes each component’s movement and interdependence with other components which are constantly in transmission to each other. These components also show that communication is a process, it works together as a system, that interaction and transaction are both possible modes of communication. The communication channels allow us to see people’s facial expression and hear voices via radio or television. Familiar channels include the different type which is include television, smoke signal, telephones, e mail, movies, voices, reports and so on. Feedback Another component in the communication process is feedback, Devito (2006, p. 7) described that the response to a message that a receiver sends back to a sender. Feedback enables a sender to determine whether the communication has been received and understood as intended. Feedback is a natural extension of effective receiving. Receivers have the responsibility of attending to, decoding and determining a message’s intended meaning. Factors vs. Multiples When working with prime numbers, students should know the difference between factors and multiples. These two terms are easily confused, but factors are numbers that can be divided evenly into the given number, while multiples are the results of multiplying that number by another. Additionally, prime numbers are whole numbers that must be greater than one, and as a result, zero and one are not considered prime numbers, nor is any number less than zero; the number two is the first prime number, as it can only be divided by itself and the number 1. Using Factorization Using a process called factorization, mathematicians can quickly determine whether a number is prime. To use factorization, you need to know that a factor is any number that can be multiplied by another number to get the same result. For instance, the prime factors of the number 10 are 2 and 5 because these whole numbers can be multiplied by one another to equal 10. However, 1 and 10 are also considered factors of 10 because they can be multiplied by one another to equal 10. This is expressed in the prime factors of 10 as 5 and 2 since both 1 and 10 are not prime numbers. Using a Calculator After using the concrete method as described in the previous section, students can use calculators and the concept of divisibility to determine whether a number is prime. Many previous studies (e.g., Jaffe, 1974; Finnerty, 1976a, b; Seyhun, 1986, 1988a, b; Rozeff and Zaman, 1988; Lin and Howe, 1990) document that corporate insiders pursue special information and on that special information, not only insiders are able to earn abnormal profits through trading stocks of own firms but also outsiders also able to earn abnormally by merely mimicking their actions. In financial economies literature, these findings have been considered as a violation of market efficiency. The main objective of this study is to determine market reactions around the day of insider trading and the day of announcements on Indian stock market. We are curious to perform our analysis on Indian data because a major chunk of studies on insider trading are concentrated on the U.S data. Therefore, the analysis of India insider trading data provides an independent outcome to compare with previous studies’ results. Besides, there are enough differences between the US and India market, which indicate that the results of these studies may not be robust in Asia or emerging markets. First difference, the ownership structure of emerging markets’ firms is more concentrated than developed markets’ firms (La Porta et al, 1999). For example, La Porta et al (1998) find that in the Indian firm, the top th... ... to price ratio and size effects of approximately 9% per annum in market model error term. However, Descartes has unique way of metaphysical argument concerning existence of God. Descartes began the fourth section by discussing about himself. The reading up to the point where he gives credit to a supreme being, God, could only suggest that Descartes was discussing about his philosophical thought about his being as a man. However, the discourse twist came when he inferred, â€Å"something indeed having every perfection of which I could have any idea, that is—to explain myself in one word—by God† (Bennett, 2007, p. 16). After this inference, the discourse changed to one that discussed the existence of God. It was at this point that it became clear that the ending would be more of God’s existence rather than a conclusion of Descartes as a human being. The change of discourse from exploration of self to a proof of God’s existence through personal evaluation was indeed an ingenious thought. Most of the times we try to prove existence of God or lack thereof by evaluating what are outside us. However, Descartes made a self-evaluation on intrinsic values of himself as a human being. By deconstructing his strengths and limitations, he was able to realize a fair conclusion about the existence of a supreme being, which we refer to as God. However, Google did not contact the publisher or pay a royalty fee, which is when the controversy began! In 2005, players in the publishing industry filed lawsuits at the program claiming copyright infringement. Google however, claimed they were operating fairly under the â€Å"fair use† doctrine codified in the Copyright Act in 1976. This program would have exclusive rights to sell books that are no longer in print, that are still under copyright, this would be millions of books (Laudon, Traver, 2009), and at the end of the day Google would have too much power. However, Sony is standing behind Google because their potential gain due the fact that they produce a series of electronic book downloader’s named the â€Å"Reader†. One of the products the company markets and sells is the â€Å"Reader,† a family of electronic book or â€Å"e-book† readers that allow users to download and read electronic copies of books on a hand-held device. In Sony Electronics’ view, the cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship the Settlement forges between Google and the copyright holders in the proposed class may have a profoundly positive impact on the market for e-book readers and related devices. For this reason, Sony Electronics believes the Settlement should be approved (Singel, 2009 pp. 7). Will Google be a de facto Monopoly? Gram Staining and Distilled Water Essay

The purpose of this experiment was to learn how to properly perform a gram stain and to also understand how gram staining can help identify either gram-positive or gram-negative organisms in the laboratory. The materials needed for this experiment included: two microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas fluorescens) in a slant agar, an inoculating loop, a microscope slide, distilled water, a Bunsen burner, four dyes (crystal violet, Gram’s iodine, ethyl alcohol, and safranin), bibulous paper, and a dye tray. The method for this experiment was as follows: 1) Cleaned the microscope slide with both soap and water and then dried 2) Flamed the inoculating loop with the Bunsen burner and then applied two small drops of water to each side (horizontally) of the slide 3) Flamed the inoculating loop again, allowed it to cool, and obtained a small sample of the first organism 4) Mixed the organisms on the inoculating loop with one of the drops of the water on the slide and spread to a nickel-sized drop 5) Repeated steps 3 and 4 for the other organism using the second water drop on the slide 6) Allowed the samples to dry and then heat fixed both samples. Applied the crystal violet dye, let it soak for 20 seconds, and then washed the dye away with distilled water off into the dye tray 8) Applied the Gram’s iodine and let it soak for a minute 9) Washed it off with alcohol for 20 seconds (or until the dye stopped running), and then immediately washed with the distilled water 10) Applied the counter-stain, safranin, and let it soak for a minute. 11) Washed with distilled water after and gently blotted it dry with bibulous paper 12) Observed both microorganisms on slide under the microscope Two different results were observed under the microscope. The first one was purple colored cocci, and the picture of the slide is on the following page. The second one revealed pink-colored rods, and the image is on the page following the first microorganisms. The results of the experiment came out as expected. There didn’t seem to be any flaws in the experiment, since the colors were distinctly different. The purple cocci were identified as the Staphylococcus aureus. Because the violet dye penetrated the membrane and stained it, it was recognized as a gram-positive organism. The pink rods were Pseudomonas florescens. It was discovered to be a gram-negative organism because the organism didn’t stain from the crystal violet. Since everything was easily identifiable, the experiment seemed to have gone as planned.

The lives of two black boys, Lafayette, 10 and Pharaoh, 7 are followed as they struggle to grow up in one of Chicago's worst housing projects. Lafayette and Pharaoh are not any different than many of their neighbors. Their mother is welfare dependent. Their father is an alcoholic and drug abuser. In the home, there are other siblings, an older brother and sister along with younger triplets, just like so many other families in the area. Kotlowitz takes you into an offensively maintained housing project infested with gangs, where murders and shootings are an everyday thing. The image of the devastation and the despair of no hope of the people living inside the project are vivid. One can truly sense the hopefulness, grasping the loss of family and ardently desire a new life for the boys. You hold out hope that things will work out for the boys. Alex Kotlowitz attempts to expose the truths of poverty, race, and children throughout his literary works. He is widely known for his concerns for urban affairs and social issues in his writings in The Wall Street Journal. Kotlowitz grew up in New York City and worked as a community organizer in Atlanta in the mid-70’s. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut where he received two degrees.
